Black Rat Snake

Ran across this guy yesterday after he got hit by a car on a rural road near my house. It is a black rat snake, and measured right around 50". That's mid-length for one of these. The bigger ones can be nearly 7 feet long. You can tell by the contrasted patterning on the back that this snake is still somewhat young. They darken as they age until they are virtually solid black along their backs. I see this type of snake hit by cars fairly often, and part of the reason for that is because their primary defense response is to freeze, not flee.
