It's been a long time since I've made a stacked leather knife handle. I'm getting ready to do some experimenting with stacked white birch, thanks to a generous member from BCUSA, and I wanted to brush up on the stacking technique and tang peening. This blade is a Lauri Progressive Temper 3" scandi and had been wrapped in a jute handle until a couple nights ago. I'll tell you what, once that jute handle sets, getting it off is a bear! I had to cut it off in small sections and then grind back down to the knife tang.
I've never tried peening before and found it a bit frustrating. The tangs on Lauri's are heat treated, which I though was aggravating when cutting it down to length, but it turns out I didn't know what aggravating was until I tried to peen this guy. After a could hundred whacks or so, I finally got it down tight, but I think I'll anneal the tang next time...
