Morning at the Etowah Indians Mounds

Spent the morning on Saturday with my boys at the Etowah Indian Mounds. They were overly energetic and their mom needed a bit of rest, plus she can't understand my affinity for visiting the mounds more than once so she was glad to miss it. To me, the history and stark contrast of the place is the appeal. It's so easy to imagine the field filled with handmade dwellings, people fishing in the water, kids and dogs running around (actually this still happens), and people heading out into the surrounding woods to hunt and gather. It's a just a nice place to suspend reality and reflect on a different period of time. My sons like it because it is wide open, green, and they can wear themselves out climbing giant flights of stairs.

Taken just prior to the mad dash down the cut path to the mounds. This is "the straightaway"

The river is running too high because the Corps is draining Lake Allatoona. When the water is down, you can see the old fishing traps in the water from the native days.
